10 Funniest Sting Wrestling Moments Ever

Over the course of a nearly four-decade career, Sting has cemented himself as one of the greats of professional wrestling. On top of being a 12-time World Champion, he took part in one of the hottest storylines at pro wrestling’s late 1990s peak, changed his look to great success, wrestled for pretty much every major North American promotion, and still remains a popular star during his current run in AEW. On top of that, he’s managed to make fans laugh, albeit not always on purpose.RELATED: WCW: 10 Wild Moments From The Sting Vs. nWo Feud Along with all those accolades, Sting has a couple of hilarious moments in his career, both intentional and unintentional. Let’s take a look at the funniest moments featuring the Stinger, including his time spent in 21st century promotions like Impact Wrestling and AEW.

10 Introducing The Shockmaster

The Shockmaster botched debut

In 1993, Sting, Davey Boy Smith, and Dusty Rhodes were set to take on Sid Vicious, Vader, and the duo of Harlem Heat in a War Games match. Sting’s team needed a fourth man, however, who was announced on Ric Flair’s talk show segment A Flair for the Gold on the TV special Clash of the Champions 24. Sting promised that their surprise partner would shock people, and announced the arrival of the Shockmaster, who burst through a wall in the set, only to trip on his way in and crash to the floor.

9 Sting Scorpion Death Drops Himself Into A Chair

Sting vs. Bobby Roode

As one of the top stars in wrestling, it’s not normal for Sting to lose a match clean, and even his loss to Bobby Roode at Victory Road 2012 wasn’t entirely due to Roode’s superior wrestling ability. In their No Holds Barred encounter, Sting grabbed his opponent to deliver the Scorpion Death Drop, only to hit his own head on the back of a nearby steel chair, allowing Roode to take advantage for the win. On top of being a funny finish, a gif of this moment often circulates under the belief that it was unintentional in a very LOL TNA kind of way.

8 The Crow’s First Words

Sting Beats Hollywood Hogan Starrcade 1997

Sting’s reinvention from a fired-up surfer to a gothic avenger played out during his feud with the New World Order in WCW, which featured the Stinger staying completely silent even when he wasn’t looming high above the ring. It was only after defeating Hollywood Hogan for the World Title at Starrcade ‘97 that Sting spoke his first words in over 14 months, and the results were weird and hilarious.

During the post-match celebration in the ring, Sting began shouting something inaudible into the camera, finishing his sentence with “MAMACITA!”

7 Sting Opens A Gift

Sting opens a gift box containing Abdullah the Butcher

The year 1991 saw Sting feuding with Cactus Jack only for an additional icon of wrestling to enter the fray in the form of Abdullah the Butcher. Abby’s introduction into the feud saw Sting unwrapping a giant gift box at ringside on his birthday only for the Butcher to emerge and immediately attack. If that weren’t funny enough, this plot twist led to the infamous Chamber of Horrors Match at Halloween Havoc ‘91, a cage match that involved strategic use of an electric chair.

6 Sting Terrorizes Eric Bischoff With A Bird

Sting terrorizes Eric Bischoff with a bird

After becoming a full-time part of Impact in 2005, in 2011 Sting made the first major revision to his gimmick in about 14 years, changing his face paint to resemble that of Heath Ledger’s Joker. Becoming “The Insane Icon,” Sting proved to be a chaotic force in the Impact Zone, including in a backstage segment where he sent a bird to terrorize Eric Bischoff in his office. It’s probably the funniest thing a wrestler has done in kayfabe with an actual animal, especially because this bird mostly just hung out on top of Bischoff’s computer.

5 Vampiro Sets Sting On Fire

Already a success in Mexico, the Canadian wrestler Vampiro made his WCW debut in 1998, becoming a part of the New Blood faction during that debacle. Sting was in the Millionaire’s Club, so naturally the two face-painted wrestlers had a feud. Rather than simply passing the torch, the two put on a “Human Torch Match,” where the winner is the one who sets his opponent on fire. Sting proved to be the loser, diving off the jumbotron after being swallowed by flames. Also, the “Sting” that got set on fire was an obvious stuntman.

4 Any Time He Does The Mask Reveal Gag

Besides putting way too much trust in Ric Flair, Sting’s greatest power is his ability to set up a ruse where he poses as someone wearing a Sting mask only to take it off to reveal that he was Sting all along. At this point, he’s done it a few times in his career, and it’s not only very funny — but it works every time.

The earliest time happened in WCW when the nWo brought out an impostor Sting, but he revisited the well years later in Impact, this time posing as fan at ringside to sneak attack Rob Van Dam. In AEW, Sting has done it twice to date, staging attacks on the Hardy Family Office as well as Scorpio Sky.

3 Sting Rejects Cody Rhodes

The aftermath of Sting’s surprise debut in December 2020 also brought a very funny moment. A week after silently showing up to save Cody Rhodes and Darby Allin from Team Taz, Sting returned to Dynamite to finally speak. Rhodes started the prompt to thank Sting and welcome him, suggesting a partnership between the two. However, Sting immediately and curtly rebuffed the wrestler who idolized him as a kid, saying that he wanted to team up with Darby Allin instead.

2 Rescued By Robocop

Sting and RoboCop

Over the course of his career, Sting has experienced a number of betrayals at the hands of supposed friends. But at WCW’s 1990 pay-per-view Capital Combat, Sting got assistance from someone who could never betray him: Detroit police officer Alex Murphy, better known as RoboCop. After the Four Horsemen attacked Sting and locked him in a cage at ringside, RoboCop (slowly) made the save for the Stinger, ripping the cage door off its hinges and chasing off Ric Flair and company.

1 Sting Gets Attacked By Dogs

Sting Vs Dogs

Late period WCW — roughly 1999 to the company’s closure in 2001 — was chock full of strange moments and unintentional hilarity, and not even Sting could escape the absurdity. At The Great American Bash ‘99, Sting took on Rick Steiner in a Falls Count Anywhere match that conveniently made its way to the back so WCW could splice in some pre-taped footage of Sting getting attacked by one of Steiner’s dogs. Not only did the footage not cut together seamlessly, but it was hilariously cheesy, with Sting trying to fight off an incredibly fake dog that sunk its teeth into his arm.
