WWE had Dusty Rhodes occasionally appear on the main roster if they had something that made sense as he already worked for the company in NXT. The final big moment for Dusty in a storyline focused on his two sons Cody Rhodes aka Stardust at the time and Dustin Rhodes aka Goldust.

A popular tag team run ended in disaster with Stardust turning heel. Dusty appeared with the hopes of getting his sons back on the same page. Stardust instead chose to continue down his heel path as he and Goldust had a lackluster feud.
9 Sapphire Betraying Him For Ted DiBiase
The first WWE run of Dusty Rhodes saw him struggling to be as successful as a wrestler there than his past in the various territories. Dusty was considered one of the rare top stars outside of WWE when he finally made the move to jump ship.
Sapphire joining Rhodes as his manager showed just different Vince McMahon wanted to portray him. However, it all ended with a huge swerve as Sapphire ditched Dusty to align with his rival Ted DiBiase. The money from DiBiase led to Sapphire betraying Rhodes for the bottom line.
8 Big Show Punching Him Out
Dusty Rhodes became a noteworthy part of the storyline of The Authority taking over WWE. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon punished anyone that didn’t follow their orders or fall in line with their demands. Dusty appeared to stand up for his son Cody Rhodes after he was fired for refusing to follow them.
Big Show was part of the story as well with The Authority blackmailing him with his job after he lost his money in bad investments. Stephanie and Triple H demanded Big Show knock out Rhodes to send a message. Big Show cried while doing it to perfectly sell the moment.
7 Randy Savage Ending His Undefeated Streak
WWE gets criticized for booking Dusty Rhodes poorly, but he was actually undefeated for almost a full year. The problem was that WWE ruined his character and held it back from ever finding success. Dusty still managed to win all his matches in lackluster storylines.
Randy Savage was the first WWE star to defeat Rhodes in a singles match. WWE felt it was the right time and wanted to elevate newer stars, but Savage felt like a perfect heel to move up the card. Dusty was also the kind of face that could take a loss without losing their credibility.
6 Teaming With Legends Vs Spirit Squad
WWE booked a unique attraction for Survivor Series 2006 when Ric Flair claimed he had a group of legends to challenge the Spirit Squad heel faction. Flair ended up having a hit list of beloved old names that the audience wanted to see.
Names like Ron Simmons, Sgt. Slaughter and Dusty Rhodes joined Flair to score a decisive victory over the Spirit Squad. This ended up being one of the final Spirit Squad moments before they were pulled off television. Most fans have no memory of Dusty battling Spirit Squad members on a live WWE PPV.
5 Final Match Vs Randy Orton
The final official match of Dusty Rhodes came in WWE to help further elevate Randy Orton’s legend killer gimmick. WWE wanted to utilize the name value of Dusty in a Texas Bullrope match against Orton to use the gimmick to hide his weaknesses at an older age.

4 Ted DiBiase Targeting Dustin Rhodes
Many fans would name Ted DiBiase as Dusty Rhodes’ best rival in WWE since they had a heated feud. Dustin Rhodes started wrestling around this time and received an opportunity in WWE since it played into his dad’s storyline.
However, DiBiase started targeting Dustin in the crowd with verbal taunts to get into Dusty’s head. WWE tried to further their intensity when DiBiase attacked Dustin in the crowd. This added to the personal nature of the story with Dusty looking for revenge.
3 Miss Elizabeth Helped Him Vs Randy Savage
WWE told a layered story when Randy Savage turned heel and ditched Miss Elizabeth as his manager in exchange for Sherri Martel. Savage was still married to Elizabeth in real life, but they were no longer on the same page with Elizabeth as a babyface struggling to get by.
The twist saw Elizabeth helping Ricky Steamboat and George “The Animal” Steele when Savage attempted to cheat. WWE could have done a lot more with the story when since Dusty Rhodes felt like the biggest afterthought winning thanks to Elizabeth’s help.
2 Breaking Script For Awkward Moment With Stephanie McMahon
One of the wildest moments of Dusty Rhodes’ career came in the later years as an authority figure. Dusty appeared a few times with the storyline of him trying to get his sons Cody Rhodes and Goldust rehired after losing their jobs in matches against Randy Orton.
WWE has been overly scripted word for word unless you are a trusted top star. Dusty attempted to break the script by saying his own lines, and he even put his hand in front of Stephanie McMahon's face to stop her from speaking. Reports leaked after that Rhodes got backstage heat for not following the script and Stephanie set him aside to admonish him for breaking WWE rules.
1 Helping Legacy Con John Cena & DX
Dusty Rhodes was almost always a babyface, but he had a one-night heel run in WWE for an odd segment. The booking power of Raw was given to Dusty that night when he placed his son Cody Rhodes in a WWE Championship match against Cody’s mentor and Legacy teammate Randy Orton.
John Cena was the guest referee to make the match even more bizarre until the plan unfolded. Dusty tricked Cena into that spot so Orton and DiBiase could beat him up. D-Generation X made the save, and it led to the heels taking charge. Dusty did this to help his son, but Orton hitting him with an RKO ended their relationship on-screen.
