10 Biggest Mistakes WCW Made With Goldberg
Goldberg had a tremendous run in WCW to define a legacy that is still relevant to WWE today when bringing him back. WCW is the place most fans would say used Goldberg best since his undefeated streak made him a star. There were even various moments of the company booking to his strengths and hiding his glaring weaknesses.

However, not even this working relationship worked perfectly looking back at what could have been. Goldberg was an outstanding star, but he was still placed into quite a few lackluster angles, matches, or storylines. Certain regrets could have seen the worst moments working out better. Each of the following mistakes was the worst made by WCW involving Goldberg.
10 Scott Hall's Cattle Prod Costing Him The Streak
Many fans still complain about Kevin Nash ending Goldberg’s undefeated streak, but the way the streak ended was worse than who ended it. Nash was quite over with the fans as many cheered when the Wolfpac leader won the WCW Championship from Goldberg.

The finish of Scott Hall using a cattle prod to injure Goldberg was a much bigger mistake than Nash winning. Goldberg looked ridiculous flailing to sell it, and the idea was going to upset fans by having a non-conclusive end to the streak.
9 Heel Turn Joining New Blood
Goldberg has gone on the record that he hated turning heel in WCW and felt it ruined his superhero appeal to younger fans. Even though Goldberg went a bit too far believing he should never be a heel, WCW picked the worst time to change his character.
The return of Goldberg from injury came during the New Blood vs Millionaire’s Club when fans badly wanted their top face back. Goldberg attacking Kevin Nash to join the New Blood was a terrible move that killed all the interest in his return.
8 Odd First Feud With Steve "Mongo" McMichael
WCW started Goldberg’s streak off with a surprising victory as an unknown and had him defeating lower mid-carders for months. Steve “Mongo” McMichael was the first major rival of Goldberg with a storyline referencing tension when they played in the NFL at the same time.
Goldberg and Mongo had an odd program that portrayed Goldberg as a heel. Mongo was a face getting targeted by the mysterious new star who never talked. WCW risked fans losing a desire to support Goldberg and thankfully made him a concrete face after it ended.
7 Losing Feud To Bret Hart
Goldberg lost a lot of star power in the final few years of WCW despite being just a few years into his debut. WCW tried to save the Bret Hart signing in late 1999 and early 2000 after they booked him terribly in his first year.
A feud between Goldberg and Bret seemed to make sense on paper since fans wanted to see two mega-stars face off. Hart winning all the big matches, even with the controversy involved, was a huge blow to Goldberg who almost never lost before this feud. Both wrestlers dislike each other today, but they could have had a much better rivalry.
6 Making Sid Too Comical Before Big Match
WCW signing Sid Vicious in 1999 came with the idea in mind of wanting to make him the big rival for Goldberg later in the year. The story revolved around Sid claiming he was going to start an undefeated streak that would surpass Goldberg’s 173-0 record.
Sid scored a lot of wins over lower-card talents and often had ridiculous handicap matches. The comedy of these run-ins and a referee holding a sign of Sid’s record made it too comical. WCW missed out on making Sid come off credible to have that big match with Goldberg that eventually flopped.
5 Never Booking A PPV Match Vs Hulk Hogan
Many pundits still criticize Eric Bischoff for booking Goldberg to win the WCW Championship from Hulk Hogan on Nitro and never having a rematch on PPV. The original decision was great for fans wanting to see Goldberg have his big moment on a live broadcast in front of a massive crowd.

However, WCW truly threw away money by not setting up a rematch on PPV. Goldberg and Hogan were their two biggest names at the time and ended the program after that one match. WCW could have set PPV box office records if they saved the rematch for a major event.
4 Failing To Deliver Singles Match Vs Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho cutting heel promos calling out Goldberg when he knew the tougher star wasn’t there accidentally created a great program. The character work from Jericho thrived mocking Goldberg’s entrance and claiming he was unbeaten against Goldberg since he didn’t show up when challenged.
Goldberg reportedly hated this idea and was talked into refusing to wrestle a match with Jericho by WCW veterans. The angle ended with Goldberg interrupting a promo to Spear Jericho and never interacting until WWE. WCW not having Goldberg on every PPV could have seen him used in a shorter squash match over Jericho since fans were into it.
3 Worked Shoot Feud With Vince Russo
The WCW tenure of Vince Russo saw him upsetting or alienating many top talents, including Goldberg. Russo’s worst ideas often came when he felt that breaking the fourth wall and running worked shoot angles would improve things.
Goldberg started to leave the ring during matches or calling out Russo to the camera to sell that he was breaking character. Fans had no idea what to make of this since the internet wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. There was no payoff to the storyline as Russo was fired before a culmination arrived.
2 Ending NWO Elite Before He Got Revenge
WCW started 1999 off with the Fingerpoke of Doom spot leading to the New World Order reuniting both Wolfpac and Hollywood factions. Goldberg suffered a brutal attack at the hands of Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Hulk Hogan, Lex Luger, Buff Bagwell, and Scott Steiner.
The new storyline seemed to be Goldberg looking to take down the nWo Elite faction that became more powerful than ever before. WCW never gave Goldberg that fulfilling moment and just feuded with Hall and Nash. Hogan focused on Ric Flair, and WCW ended the nWo Elite without Goldberg’s presence.
1 Never Winning WCW Championship Second Time
The biggest mistake that WCW made with Goldberg was only booking one red-hot world title reign. Goldberg winning the WCW Championship from Hulk Hogan during his undefeated streak was the only time he held that belt.
WCW felt that Goldberg was too over to win the title again, but they badly needed some positive things to change momentum in 1999 and beyond. Goldberg winning more world titles in WWE than WCW is quite shocking when looking back at his career.
